Ridin’ the River

August 17th Shady Oaks residents and team members traveled to Heritage Care Center, our sister facility in Iowa Falls, for a much awaited joint outing. The first stop was the Empress Boat Club, a 1937 log cabin on the Iowa River that is the home of the Empress Riverboat. Listed on the National Historic Register, the Boat Club houses many historical photos and other memorabilia.
The Empress is a large double-decker riverboat which seats more than 30 people on each level. The main level has booth seating enclosed by windows allowing for an unobstructed view of the surroundings. With 70’s music playing in the background, residents and team members enjoyed a picnic lunch as they watched the scenery.
Our captain, and tour guide, identified sites along the river and shared local history as he motored up and down the river. There were many beautiful homes by the river, parks, multiple historical sites, a swinging bridge, a small waterfall, a lighthouse replica, limestone bluffs that were home to river pigeons, and many other things along the way.
The warm, sunny day was perfect for a relaxing ride on the water. Everyone was happy to be outside on such a beautiful day and it was fun spending time with the folks from Heritage Care Center!
