Sights and Sounds of Summer
Shady Oaks residents appreciated seeing a parade of classic tractors drive by the windows recently. A group of farmers and classic farm equipment enthusiasts, led by organizer Paul Nehman of Lytton, Iowa, drove 54 tractors on a 30-mile round trip. The route, which began in Yetter, travelled around the western half of Calhoun County and a small portion of Sac County. As the line of vintage tractors made its way through Rainbow Bend County Park, Grant County Park, and Lake City folks from the area were treated to the special experience of seeing and hearing these powerful machines. Several Shady Oaks residents are retired farmers. For them, just the sight of these classic Farmall or John Deere tractors was enough to bring back lots of memories and stories of days on the farm. Resident Alan U. shared, “I really enjoyed the parade. I saw Internationals, Olivers, Fords, many kinds of tractors. Most of them were from the 60’s I’d say. All of the tractors were clean and looking good. I even recognized a couple of the drivers! It was pretty neat. I remember farming with tractors like those. And it brought back memories of summertime tractor rides and parades I’ve been in myself.”
